Field of dreams: if you build it they will come?

Remember the line in Field of Dreams? If you build it they will come whispered to Kevin Costner throughout the movie. Well this is the line most business people whisper to themselves and each other. Or at least they used to but is this relevant now?

I can’t say I have the answer but I’m exploring this topic as increasingly start ups are encouraged by investors to build a community first, product last. This is based on the theory of the customer is right and you need to identify not dictate their needs before selling to them and once you have finessed the product or services you know that customers want you have built a large community to launch from and help you grow. Pretty sensible but is it correct in all cases and can you retrofit a community?

To discuss these questions I will be hosting a room at 8pm this evening on Clubhouse App which you are invited to join. You can find me at this account @shaziasaleem and if you are not already on the app, this link will allow you to skip the waiting list and come straight to the event or event details if you click the link early.
