Film Recommendation : Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Never Rarely Sometimes Always is one of the best films I have seen this year.
When was the last time you saw a film about two cousins? As someone who is close to mine, it was especially lovely to see this relationship play out on screen.
One of the cousins, Autumn, realises she is pregnant and has to travel to New York state to get an abortion. The film is about so much more, although I must say the politics being shown on screen were so heartbeaking to think that girls and women in the USA still have to go through so much to make decisions about their own pregnancies. What was truly remarkable about this film is all that you learn about the two cousins through their actions and their silences. It is so refreshing to be a part of someone’s life without a plinky plonky narrative of “and then they did this and said that and that made them feel like this”.
All of the men in the film are dreadful and it brought back awful memories of being 17 and how hard it was to navigate this world around minging leery men.
Thank god for Planned Parenthood in the USA and our own similar services like Brook in the UK. There are fabulous caring women all over the World and I love them! The title of the film comes from a series of questions that Autumn has to answer when she is with a counsellor at Planned Parenthood and it is such an incredible scene, I am still thinking about it.
Available on Amazon Prime and lots of other places, this is a must watch. Trailer above but I like to watch films without knowing what to expect.
Enjoy!
